This time of year always finds me with mixed emotions for the season change. I adore being outside and scoping out new hiking spots, or heading to the ocean. Which translates to not being a fan of the outdoors once those temps hit below 30. If you see me at ski lodge, I'm the girl inside with a hot chocolate while sitting by the fire. Always keeping it cozy. As the leaves slowly fall off the trees and December creeps up I get the itch to be at home. The homebody in me starts preparing for some hibernating, and I make sure to cozy up my home for the inevitable colder weather. Book reading, movie watching and comfort food weather.
Home should be a reflection of where you heart is. From the decor to the feeling you get when you scan each room- make it a place that you feel comfortable in. Just like we get our closets transitioned to fall and winter clothes, our homes can make the same transition in subtle but meaningful ways.
I found this piece of wood in the sales section at Home Goods for just $5, and added it to my table as the centerpiece. I love the way the green in the plants added bright pops of color. When the days become shorter, and the Earth begins to go to sleep for the winter, spreading plant life throughout your home is always a great winter pick me up.
I am still in love with these wooden place mats from Pier One that I bought years ago so they have become the staple piece for the dining table. I tend to stick to warm and neutral tones for the fall/winter and did just that with this everyday set of dishes I picked up at Target. Here's a little tip- keep your table set all year as a reminder that it's made for sitting and enjoying a good meal with family and friends. This keeps clutter from around the house landing on the table.
Ready for Entertaining
More time indoors means more time doing some entertaining. As an extension of the bar area I added this bookshelf and repurposed it as additional storage space for glasses, liquor... and why not throw in a skull and a peace sign?
Light Up Candles
I'm slightly obsessed with battery operated candles, and love that you can find them in all sizes. Having them glowing throughout the house in the winter months creates warmth and a soothing feeling in any space. I always head to the Dollar Store and stock up on them for the winter months.
More green, more Earth elements. I found these pieces of birch tree at Crate & Barrel, and added some bright green accents from Pier One to liven up the decor. I love the way this section of the house glows at night when this candle is lit.
This ottoman is where our feet land at the end of every day. It's also where I keep my favorite reads stacked on top. I tend to do more reading in the winter months so keeping books and my favorite magazines handy is a must. It's also a reminder to do more reading and less scrolling.
Throws and Pillows
More time indoors for movie nights and lounging means the couch must be comfy. I love this chenille throw blanket from Pottery Barn that adds great texture and comfort to the couch, and the warm tones in the pillows are inviting for the winter months. Switching up your pillows and blankets each season are an easy way to add some interest to the space, and keep things fresh.
A Cozy Spot Just for You
Probably my favorite corner in the house. My desk space. It stays clutter free which keeps my mental energy clear and focused. I think we all need a space in our homes where we can visit to take some time out for ourselves.
Until next time,
Always Living Light,
