The Power of Gratitude

I picked up a Podcast habit this year, and I’m listening to my favorites whenever I get the chance. I have about a twenty five minute commute to work in the morning. For a Rhode Islander that’s the equivalent of just way too long, so it’s the perfect opportunity to listen in my car. I also listen while I’m cleaning, cooking and ironing, all tasks made more bearable with some good background noise (I don’t love cooking). I was cleaning up my bathroom today and I tuned in to Mastin Kipp’s Power + Purpose podcast. He was chatting with Dr. Christiane Northrup, a leading authority in women’s health and wellness, and best selling author. She said something that stopped me in my tracks (well I put the iron down actually) and it prompted me to write this post.

Everyday throughout 2016 Christiane posted a different a video on Instagram of what she was grateful for, with the hashtag #366grateful. I’ve heard of similar posts during the month of November that are centered around being thankful, and maybe a month of gratitude posts on social media. This idea however of posting everyday for a whole year really intrigued me. Here’s why- because some days suck. Some days we don’t have it in us to dive into the gratefulness, and all the blessings. Maybe we’re too tired, or frustrated, or let down by someone or ourselves. But she found something everyday to be grateful for. I decided to challenge myself to do the same in 2017.

I don’t set New Year’s resolutions, each year I just strive to be a better version of myself. I strive to be a better human for myself and those around me, and I am conscious of goals that I set. I’m going to make this a daily habit for myself in an effort to find the good in everyday, because I know it’s there. Also as a way for others to hopefully join in and move through the year in gratitude. I believe that when we are grateful, even for the simplest of things, it interrupts anxiety. It calms us. It allows us to be present. Life is a series of thousands of tiny miracles, and we need to notice them.

Follow me on instagram, @laurentheorganizer, in 2017 where I will be chronicling my 365 days of gratitude with the hashtag #iamgrateful. If you do, I can promise you I will be grateful.

Always living light,

Lauren
